Questions About Conception & Pregnancy with PCOS

Hi, I haven't seen much activity in this community in a while, so I hope I can get a few responses!

As you may already know, I have a pretty severe case of PCOS; my ovaries are very enlarged and often covered with multiple cysts, I menstruate very infrequently when I'm not taking The Pill (I've gone for more than six months without menstruating), and I am insulin resistant. In the past I have managed my PCOS with various drugs, including The Pill, metformin, spironolactone (to inhibit unwanted hair growth), and Usept tablets for the interstitial cystitis I developed possibly due to my PCOS.

Since my husband and I decided to try to conceive, I've had to stop taking all my medications because all of them pose a possible risk to the fetus (the effects of metformin and Usept on pregnancies hasn't been widely studied, so my doctors recommended against using them while trying to conceive). Because I've been off all of my medications, I haven't been menstruating regularly and I haven't really expected to get pregnant without any fertility treatments. So, my question is, have any of you ladies been surprised to get pregnant even though you didn't seem to be ovulating? My last menstrual cycle was at least four months ago.

I'm especially curious because I've been having PMS-like symptoms for about a week now, but I have had yet to menstruate. In addition to that, I've been constipated and fatigued, which are all symptoms of early pregnancy, but I am extremely doubtful that I'm pregnant because of my PCOS; with my ovaries, I cannot believe it could "just happen" like it happens for women with normal ovaries and cycles. I took two pregnancy tests, the first came up with no result (the symbol in the "control" window never appeared) and the second turned up negative, which is what I expected, but two days later I'm in the same situation and have yet to start bleeding! I'm going to retest in a few days and if things still have not changed and I get another negative result, then I'm going ask for an earlier appointment with my gynecologist, who I'm supposed to see on June 12 for a regular checkup and to talk about fertility options.

I don't think I'm pregnant and I'm not menstruating, so do any of you ladies have any idea what else might be going on? Have any of you experienced anything like this before? I'm not scared, but I am a little weirded-out because my body has never behaved like this before.

Sorry for the long post! I just wanted to be as clear as possible about what's going on, because I have no idea what to make of it at this point.
